A Message from Frank Giordano, President & CEO

Hello, friends!

Music Director Michael Krajewski delights with another blockbuster lineup for 2018-2019, the POPS 40th Anniversary Season. You won’t want to miss any of these amazing performances! The POPS is, once again, rocking and swinging through the last 70 years of American popular music — this time with a sparkling array of talent! We’ve added a seventh concert series for next season — internationally acclaimed and Philly-based Terell Stafford brings JAZZED! to Verizon Hall in collaboration with The Philly POPS BIG Band in January.

2018-19 CONCERT SCHEDULE

September 28-30, 2018 — Leslie Odom, Jr.: Celebrating the POPS 40th Anniversary
Leslie Odom, Jr. grew up in East Oak Lane attending Masterman and CAPA. His Tony-winning turn as Aaron Burr in Hamilton made him a star. He’s perfect to kick off this 40th Anniversary Season with his elegant and thoroughly modern take on classics from “Autumn Leaves” to “Unforgettable” and “Mona Lisa”. Odom effortlessly pairs this jazzy past with Rent and Hamilton favorites of today.

November 9-11, 2018 — Storm Large: Crazy Kind of Love
Storm Large is the HOT counterpoint to Leslie Odom, Jr.’s cool. She’s known for her memorable interpretations of love songs — and here celebrates hits from Sinatra to Led Zeppelin and Queen, from the ‘30s to the ‘90s. “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” to “Somebody to Love” and “Kashmir”.

January 18-20, 2019 — JAZZED! The Philly POPS BIG Band with Terell Stafford
Stafford’s trumpet supports The Philly POPS BIG Band in a program dedicated to Philadelphia’s jazz history. The second half of the program explores the music of Billie Holiday and John Coltrane. Both the Temple University Jazz Band and University of the Arts Z-Band perform in a pre-show.

February 1-3, 2019 — POPS Rocks the ’80s
Stuart Chafetz conducts a rocking visit to the decade that saw Michael Jackson, Blondie, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and George Michael top the charts. Their unforgettable tunes come alive again with Chafetz’s power arrangements. This show is certain to get you on your feet!

March 1-3, 2019 — Uptown Nights with Byron Stripling
Byron Stripling, multi-talented trumpeter, singer, and entertainer, wowed with his tribute to Ella, Louis & All that Jazz! last season. He’s back to welcome us all to the world of The Cotton Club and The Savoy, Harlem’s famed musical hot spots. Vocalist Carmen Bradford and tap dancer Ted Louis Levy lend new meaning to “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing!”

April 12-14, 2019 — Cole Porter's Broadway: Too Darn Hot with David Charles Abell
Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell puts Cole Porter’s magic on stage with Marin Mazzie, Jason Danieley, and Catherine Russell as guest vocalists. “All Through the Night”, “I Get a Kick out of You”, “Night and Day” — it’ll be “Too Darn Hot” to handle.

May 3-5, 2019 — American Bandstand: A Philadelphia Story
The longtime hitmaker TV show started in 1952 and played on in Philly until 1964. Everybody came to town. Tributes to Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian. “At the Hop”, “The Twist”, “Pretty Little Angel Eyes”, and much more. Michael Krajewski celebrates the early years of rock ‘n’ roll with the Doo Wop Project in this original program.

Remember to add on a performance of A Philly POPS Christmas: Spectacular Sounds of the Season!, December 1-22, 2018. Todd Ellison, hailed by The New York Times as “one of Broadway’s electric conductors,” is set to partner with Hamilton’s Mandy Gonzalez to create another magical holiday spectacular, with over 300 musicians and choir members on stage to help! Don’t wait another minute — you won’t want to miss out on any of the excitement!

See you at the POPS!

With great appreciation,

Frank Giordano,
