Stage Door Canteen!
02/23/2005It.s been 60 years since the end of the last World War but the poignant melodies and songs of that era linger on. The big bands, the girl singers, the stage door canteens where the service men and women could forget the fighting for a few hours and dance.
For four days in April, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops will take you back to those bittersweet times, and joining Peter and The Pops is big band singer Lynn Roberts.
Performances begin Wednesday, April 6 at 8 pm and continue Friday, April 8 at 8 pm; Saturday, April 9 at 2 pm and Sunday, April 10 at 3 pm. All concerts take place in Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.
Lynn Roberts began her singing career at the age of 15 with Charlie Spivak and his band. She moved on after one year, joining bandleader Vincent Lopez for a short time, and then spent five years with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. She performed all over the country and at many famous clubs, including the renowned Paramount Theatre in New York City, singing with the Dorsey Brothers and Frank Sinatra. Lynn then sang with Benny Goodman and his orchestra for ten years, and she also spent four years with Harry James. She is the only girl singer to have sung with all these superstar band leaders!
