The POPS Brass Percussion Ensemble is a fourteen piece group that performed at Pope Francis’ speech at Independence Hall last year. On July 4, the Ensemble returns to play Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man during the city’s new Salute to Everyday Heroes presentation and will kick off the parade on Independence Mall.
The presentation will honor Leslie Odom Jr., the East Oak Lane native who earned fame for his role as Aaron Burr in the Tony-winning musical Hamilton on Broadway and in the 2013 musical television series Smash. Odom attended Masterman and High School for Creative and Performing Arts. He also sang solos in the Canaan Baptist Church choir in Germantown as a child. Odom will read the Declaration of Independence. A patriotic parade from Independence Mall to Penn’s Landing at 11am follows the presentation.
The Philly POPS SALUTE Series encourages recognition of service and commitment through an expanding set of events and activities—each transformative moments of celebration for our community. The Salute performances recognize the service and sacrifice of those dedicated to a collective identity of American values and tradition.
Your sponsorship or donation will help to offset the cost of hosting the veterans, military and first responders at Salute Series events throughout the year. Learn more about how you can support this event and all Salute Series events.
