Guest Artist: Ann Hampton Callaway
Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the most widely acclaimed singer/songwriters working in pop/jazz today. She recently starred in the Broadway musical hit, "Swing", receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and won the Theater World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. She has received national attention from television audiences for her song, "The Nanny Named Fran", which she wrote and performed for the CBS television comedy hit, "The Nanny." Another of Ann's compositions, "At the Same Time" was recorded by Barbra Streisand for her CD, "Higher Ground" which debuted nationally at #1. Ms Streisand asked Ann to write lyrics to a Rolf Lovland melody, which she entitled "I've Dreamed of You" and was sung by Barbra Streisand to James Brolin at their wedding and was recorded for her CD, "A Love Like Ours." She also included these songs on her recent CD "Timeless." Barbra Streisand asked Ann Hampton Callaway to write a new Christmas song, which Ann entitled "A Christmas Lullaby" that was recorded for Streisand's new holiday CD, "Christmas Memories" and was released October 30th. Ann recorded a new CD "Signature" which features the signature songs of the great jazz legends of the 20th Century including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday, performed with pianist Kenny Barron and guest artist Wynton Marsalis which will be released in early 2002. Ann appeared as special guest artist in a nationally televised performance with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops and also with them at Tanglewood and Carnegie Hall. Ann performed in New York with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and was featured guest artist with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. Ann recently starred in "Midnight Swing" for the PBS television special "Live from Lincoln Center." Ann's other CD recordings are "Easy Living," (After 9) "To Ella with Love" (After 9), "After Ours" (Denon), "This Christmas" (Angel), "Bring back Romance" (DRG), "Ann Hampton Callaway" (DRG), and "Sibling Revelry" (DRG). The Cole Porter Estate officially recognizes Ann Hampton Callaway as the only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter having set her music to his posthumously discovered lyric, "I Gaze Into Your Eyes" recorded for the Cole Porter revisited series. Ann is also the winner of ASCAP's Johnny Mercer Songwriting Award. Her performances have been heard on numerous national and international television shows such as the Today Show, CNN, The Charlie Rose Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC News, PBS, and BBC. She performed for President Clinton in Washington D.C. and was the invited guest performer for President Gorbachev's Youth Peace Summit in Moscow. Ann performed with her sister Liz Callaway their original musical, "Sibling Revelry" at London's Donmar Warehouse to wide critical acclaim. While continuing her performances in jazz and concert venues nationally and internationally, she is also working on several songwriting projects for film and Broadway. Ann will have her own radio show on the new Sirius Satellite Network beginning in December. She is also collaborating on her national musical/variety television show, which is slated to debut in February. Ann was born and raised in Chicago. Her father is John Callaway, a former CBS News correspondent and host of the PBS show, "Chicago Tonight." Her mother Shirley Callaway is a prominent Broadway vocal coach. Ann resides in New York.
