Education Programs
The POPS Project/Jazz in the Schools workshops and master classes expand students' musical knowledge and teach disciplines and techniques for studying music that can translate to successful learning in core-curriculum subjects. Students learn about music, jazz, the people and historical events that influenced the art of jazz, and make connections with other core curriculum subjects.
Cuts in budgets and funding have drastically reduced the arts education opportunities in many of the area's public schools. According to a 1997 Central Philadelphia Development Corporation report, within the Philadelphia Public Schools: 91% offer no instrumental music classes, 17% offer no vocal music classes, and 29% offer no visual arts classes.
The POPS Project was specifically designed to provide the underserved community, and it will focus on specific schools that have little or no music programs, an endangered student population, and those of multi-cultural districts and populations. Participation in workshops and master classes encourages creativity, a positive self-image, teamwork, and a respect for one's own and other's cultural heritage. It is a program that provides young people with the opportunity to sharpen their skills, build self-esteem, and open their hearts and minds to experiences that can enrich their lives for a lifetime.
