Guest Artist: Ron Raines

Ron Raines is well known to soap-opera audiences for his work on CBS's daytime series Guiding Light. Since 1994 he has been nominated three times for the Soap Opera Digest Award as Outstanding Villain for his work as Alan Spaulding.

Though he doesn't get to do much singing as Alan Spaulding, Raines is well known to theater audiences in New York and around the country as one of America's leading musical-theater performers. On Broadway, he most recently starred as Billy Flynn in the hit musical Chicago and is best known as Gaylord Ravenal in the 1983 revival of Jerome Kern's Show Boat. Other Broadway and New York credits include Teddy and Alice; Olympus on My Mind; New York City Opera's The Merry Widow; The Duchess of Gerolstein; One Touch of Venus; A Little Night Music; Oh Lady! Lady!; and Carnegie Hall's Tribute to Lerner and Loewe. Additionally, he has played leading roles at the country's leading regional theaters and opera companies in virtually every major American musical and operetta, including South Pacific; Annie; Kismet; Kiss Me Kate; The King and I; Naughty Marietta; Brigadoon; Rose Marie; Oklahoma!; Carousel; Side by Side Sondheim; Follies; and Man of La Mancha.

As a concert performer, Raines has appeared as a soloist with the symphony orchestras in Baltimore; Baton Rouge; Boston Pops (with John Williams); Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Des Moines; Knoxville; Milwaukee; Minnesota; Omaha; Philadelphia (with Peter Nero); Pittsburgh (with Marvin Hamlisch); Portland, Maine; Rochester; San Diego; San Francisco; Spokane; Tulsa; and Washington, D.C.'s National Symphony. Internationally he has appeared with the Israeli Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony, and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Raines is also an accomplished solo artist; his debut recording is Ron Raines: Broadway Passion. Raines can also be heard on Leading Men Don't Dance and a collection of musicals including Guys and Dolls, The Pajama Game, Man of La Mancha, 110 in the Shade, Annie, Wonderful Town, and the upcoming One Touch of Venus. Raines has appeared in two of PBS's Great Performances, including Gershwin at 100; The Rodgers and Hart Story: Thou Swell, Thou Witty; and My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs.
