Guest Artist: Nestor Torres

Over the past decade, flutist Nestor Torres has all but defined a new genre of popular music, a style where spicy rhythms of his Caribbean homeland meld with tantalizingly romantic melodies to create some of the smoothest, most danceable sounds in contemporary instrumental music. Most of his fans already consider this infectious hybrid of exotic rhythms and catchy themes to be a veritable music paradise. Nestor Torres' brilliant playing and unique style is transforming the role of the instrument in today's musical landscape. He has brought the flute back to Smooth Jazz radio, scoring major airplay and chart action on the New Adult Contemporary chart. At the same time he makes masterful contributions to the realms of Jazz, Latin Jazz, Classical, and Latin popular styles. His playing is a rare blend of virtuosity, passion and pure melodic satisfaction.

In 2001, Nestor had the honor of receiving a Latin Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album for This Side of Paradise (Shanachie). He received his first Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance category for Luna Latina. Nestor has been featured as part of the Latin Jazz All Stars in a prime time ABC Television network special A Celebration of America's Music. Some of his other performances include the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1994 Grammy Awards, where he performed with Gloria Estefan. He was a featured performer at the Presidential Inauguration on January 20, 1997. Nestor has toured with Andy Garcia and Cachao, performing with them on The Tonight Show and Late Show With David Letterman. He also performed with Andy Garcia in the HBO Emmy nominated movie The Arturo Sandoval Story. In 2000, Nestor debuted as an actor starring in an eight-part mini-series for Puerto Rico titled Notes from the Heart. Nestor Torres is a crusader for children's rights, he frequently visits schools and donates his time to children's charities.

Nestor's interest in composing, arranging and performing was sparked when he first started playing the flute at the age of thirteen in his hometown of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. His father, an amateur musician who played the piano and the vibraphone, greatly encouraged him. Nestor went on to study at the Inter-American University in San German, Puerto Rico before spending time at the Berklee College of Music, the Mannes College of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music.
